4 EASY STEPS TO DESIGNING A LARGE ROOM

DESIGNING LARGE ROOMS CAN BE SOMEWHAT OF A PUZZLE DUE TO THE MULTI-FUNCTIONALITY THAT THE SPACE OFTEN TAKES ON.

Although dividing a single room’s space to fit different functions offers a great opportunity to showcase a home’s design, successfully determining where one “function” ends and another one begins may take some planning.

Creating Boundaries

The first step to properly designing a large room is to give each part of the room enough space to be its own area. This may be accomplished by giving each area a distinguished design “identity” that merges and complements with the overlying design style.

In this example of a large open-planned space, one can easily visualize where the kitchen ends and the living room begins. These two spaces look separated yet connected as the design in each area differs but the colors coordinate and merge together creating a cohesive, multi-purpose space.

When dividing up a large space into multiple areas, such as a living room, dining room, game room, etc., creating clear walkways that forge each area’s boundaries is an important aspect. One may create such walkways with the use of area rugs, lighting, and the lighting layout.

Area Rugs

This space is a wonderful example of how to section off different parts of a room. The area rugs clearly distinguish between the living room and dining area, providing each area with appropriate proportions in relation to the size of the area and the space between one another.

Lighting and Lighting Placement

When giving each area an identity through colors and fabrics, make sure to remember that the lighting is also very much involved in this process. A lighting’s brightness, placement, and design all work together in establishing an ideal mood, as well as differentiating each area’s space, so the dining room lights are to give off a different look and feel than the lighting used just above the pool table.

Design Style

Design the entire space based upon a chosen style (traditional, contemporary, modern, and so on) but give each area its own identity; don’t use the same fabrics in each area but use different fabrics that will compliment each other, or refrain from using the exact same colors and find a palette of colors that blend harmoniously together.

Using the above four tips will help you with putting your large room design ideas into action. Whether you are working on a large great room or an open floor plan design home, these tips will make the difference between a disjointed space and one that is spectacularly divided by both physical and visual divides.
